“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
—Arthur C. Clarke
Tortuga 2500 is a typical ‘firm’-science background. Generally, most technology is based on hard-science principles with the exception of several core technologies which enhance the flavour of the setting.
The three key ‘miracles’ of science used in the setting are the Hyperdrive, the Repulsor Generator, and Fusion reactors and engines. These technologies stretch or even violate known physical laws for the sake of gameplay. For instance Repulsor technology allows ships to have artificial gravity so characters will not be floating around all the time. However, the technology is expensive and not all areas of a ship will be so equipped. Zero-gravity action can take place in cargo bays or outside vessels and is handled with Newtonian physics. Watch your step when outside your ship, or you could have a one-way tour of the solar system!
